God’s own country has again geared up to celebrate its 63rd Nehru Trophy Boat Race on 8th August 2015 at Punnamada, Alappuzha. With the advent of August, the otherwise placid water of Punnamada Lake gets sliced by the slashing oars of fast pacing boats. The lake comes alive as hoards of people from different parts of India and the world gather along the banks to immerse in the glory and majesty of the yearly water regatta.
Nehru Trophy Boat Race is held on the second Saturday on August every year and therefore this year it is scheduled for 8th of the month. It is named after Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, the first Prime Minister of India. Boats of various sizes compete in the event and they get decorated with colorful trimmings and umbrellas. The majestic impressive structures can accommodate around 100 rowers and 4 helmsmen in each one of them. As the rowers gently pace up their act and the huge boats slash the blue backwaters, it creates a spectacular sight and an overall vivacious environment for people to watch, cheer and immerse in the beauty of this unique act.
A large number of participants in gigantic racing boats like these mark the uniqueness of Nehru Trophy Boat Race, as no other sport is the world is known to have such a large team of participants. The synchronized way of rowing majestic snake boats, inherent attitude of rowers, ceremonial water processions and decorative sights add to the beauty of the event. Nehru Trophy Boat race is said to retain the essence of ancient Kerala culture that casts a magical spell upon global visitors even today.
